Company History
Network Solutions started out in 1979 as a technology consulting company with a focus on applications development. In 1993, Network Solutions was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop the Internet's domain name registration service. After developing the technology, Network Solutions became the first and only domain name registrar until 1999, when the domain name industry opened up to competition. In 2000, Network Solutions was acquired by VeriSign, which was the largest internet purchase in history.
In 2003, Network Solutions was acquired by Pivotal Equity Group, an investment firm that focuses on companies in the telecommunications, Internet services, energy, manufacturing, consumer products and leisure industries. At that time, the company re-launched the Network Solutions brand and began concentrating on developing a robust suite of Web-related services to help customers establish and grow their businesses online. In 2007, Network Solutions was again sold, this time to General Atlantic, with the focus of continuing to grow Network Solutions as the provider of online marketing services for small to medium sized businesses.
Today, Network Solutions hosts millions of domain names and hundreds of thousands of e-mailboxes and Web sites for its customers.
